Artistic Mission
Artistic MissionTeatro Máscara Mágica was co-founded by William Virchis and Jorge Huerta in 1989 to increase the production of multicultural theatre and to provide professional theatrical opportunities to underrepresented segments of the population. Another mission of the Teatro is to subsidize ticket prices to make live theatre affordable to families and the less affluent.
William Virchis is Producing Artistic Director of Teatro Máscara Mágica. An integral part of San Diego’s performing arts education for more than 30 years, he worked as Director of Visual and Performing Arts at the Sweetwater Union High School District, where he also taught and directed for the (CTE-ROP) theatre program; and as an instructor and director in the Southwestern College Theatre Department. In 2012, the Sweetwater Union High School District honored him in a public ceremony by re-dedicating the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Department and renaming it the William Virchis Visual and Performing Arts Department. La Pastorela, Let the Eagle Fly, and I Am Celso, among others, are Teatro Máscara Mágica (TMM) productions that have garnered critical success and embedded their creative imprint on the cultural map of a city in ongoing need of a multicultural theatrical identity. La Pastorela has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts as well as numerous human rights organizations. Teatro Máscara Mágica was a recipient of the 2004 San Diego County Multicultural Heritage Award for its leadership in multicultural theatre. |
